The Tiger Mk. I was originally designed as a main battle tank to support mech units of the Federated Commonwealth. Meant to bring affordable, high firepower to the tank regiments of the Federated Commonwealth and to work in conjuction with mechs and aerospace units, the Tiger is a solid design. The Tiger Mk. I is capable of giving fire support or closing in to fight enemies with equal success. The Tiger design was based on ancient tank models and reflects those design qualities. Heavy armor, a large main gun with smaller supporting weapons, and manueverability are all part of the Tiger philosphy. Capabilities: The Tiger is a fusion engine main battle tank that is well respected on the field of battle. Its Norse-Storm Model 7D Gauss Rifle is a devastating main weapon, and while its ammo is limited it can still wreak havoc on enemy forces. The Gauss Rifle is supported by a Defiance P5M Medium Pulse Laser that is mounted coaxially in the turret with the Gauss Rifle, as well as a brow mounted Chiscomp 2000 ER Small Laser. While the designers originall wanted to supplement the turret mounted weaponry with an addition Medium Pulse Laser in the brow, space restrictions prevented them from mounting the larger weapon, forcing the use of the ER Small Laser. The Tiger is armored with 13 tons of A.C.E. Type 4F Heavy armor. This makes the Tiger a tough nut to crack when met in the open field. One major drawback the Tiger Mk. I has is that it does not mount CASE. This means that a direct hit to the Gauss Rifle almost always results in the crewman manning the turret being fatally wounded. The Tiger is an open field tank, and its armor configuration shows it. While the turret, front, and sides carry a very think hide of armor, the Tiger has very little armor protection to the rear. Since the Tiger's main role is to engage the enemy in the open, the lack of heavy rear armor was not seen as a problem. However, it has proven to be over time. While few armored vehicles can stand face to face with a Tiger and survive; light, fast vehicles can easily knock a Tiger out by moving in behind and breaching the rear armor which covers the fusion reactor. This oversight was corrected with the upgraded Tiger Mk. II. Variants: There is one variant of the Tiger, the Tiger Mk. II TGR-9S. This variant corrects the weak rear armor problem, and trades the brow mounted ER Small Laser for advanced electronics. The Tiger Mk. II is also some 10 tons heavier than the Tiger Mk. I, and carries more armor and ammunition. Deployment: Tigers are used only by the Federated Commonwealth. After the split of that realm, both the Lyran Alliance and Federated Suns retained Tiger lances, and use them in the assault role. Tigers are deployed in companies, and form the backbone of most former Federated Commonwealth amored assault regiments. |
