The 95 ton GRD-5S Grenadier was requested by the
Lyran Alliance from Akula Corporate Engineering to act as
a counter to the excellent SFR-3D Spitfire. With the
Federated Commonwealth on the brink of civil war, the
Lyran commanders wanted to ensure battlefield
supremecy over Federated Suns forces. The Grenadier,
while lacking the long range capabilities of the Spitfire has
a powerful medium range attack capability that cannot be
underestimated.
Capabilities:
The Grenadier is a first rate assualt mech that uses mass
fire to devastate its opponant. Mounting a pair of Magna
Hellstar II PPCs and a pair of Defiance Disintegrator LB
10-X Autocannons the Grenadier has the ability to core
even the largest of opponants in a single blast. If the
intended victim does manage to close within close range,
the Grenadier has a pair of Coventry SRM4s to add insult
to injury. The rear arc cannot safely be approached
either, as the Grenadier has a single rear mounted
Hesperus B3M Medium Laser to keep enemy mechs off its
back.
The Grenadier utilizes a standard Pitban 285 Fusion
Engine for motive power, which gives it average speed for
a mech its size. The one advantage of the standard
engine is that it is less bulky and less fragile than a lighter
XL reactor. This adds to the mechs basic hardiness, and
makes repairs much easier, as there is ample room to work
within the torso of the mech.
The Grenadier takes advantage of Endo Steel internal
structure to form the skeleton of the mech. By using the
Endo Steel, the designers were able to fit more heavy
weapons and armor to the Chasis. The Grenadier is
armored with 16.5 tons of the excellent A.C.E. Type 5
Super Heavy armor which gives it ample protection on the
field of battle. The Grenadier also utilizes CASE to
minimize the damage should the armor be breached and
the stored ammunition ignited.
Deployment:
The Grenadier has only recently gone into full production.
So far, 20 units have been delivered to the Lyran Alliance,
with another 80 on order. The Grenadier is deployed to
mixed assault lances where it can be effectively used for
medium range brawling.
Lyran field commanders have been thouroughly impressed
with the capailities of the Grenadier, and plan to use it in
the initial stages of an assualt to gain battlefield superiority.
Once superiority has been achieved, the Grenadier will
likely be used to to maintain that superiority, as well as to
capture and hold key objectives.
