After the Clan invasion Comstar began a program of rebuilding their shattered forces. Further losses came to Comstar forces through the defection of warriors to the Word of Blake movement. While they retianed possession of Terra Comstar began a massive rebuilding campiagn only to see it cut short to the taking of Terra by the Word of Blake forces.
Despite the loss of Terra, Comstar engineers rebuilt factories in the crippled Rasalhgue Republic. As the forces continued to rebuild, some were caught up in the Federated Commonwealth's civil war and decimated. Having lost many Star League vintage mechs Comstar looked to replace some with newer more capable designs.
On such design was already in prototype stages at Iron City Mechworks when Comstar agents visted the site. They immediately saw a replacement for the fast scout mech the, Hussar when shown a prototype going through trials.
The GR1-Gremlin, like the hussar, has excellent speed. However, the Gremlin had a maximum speed of 162 KPH and could out pace the Hussar. However like the Hussar, the ground speed came at a price; little armor and short on firepower.
The armor on the GR1, does exceede that of the mech which Comstar wanted to replace. 4.5 tons of ferro-fiberous armor does allow the mech to take some punishment but not much. While the Gremlin does have to fists, it would only be a suicidal pilot that would attempt it against any but the lightest of enemy mechs. Thanks to its ground speed the Gremlin can easily out pace what it cannot out shoot.
For weaponry the Hussar and the GR1-Gremlin does carry the same weapon in a large extended laser. Using quality over quantity thinking, the GR1 beats out the Hussar by slaving the weapon to a advanced targeting computer to make its shots more deadlier. To help hide the mech from prying eyes a Guradian ECM was installed allowing the Gremlin to sneak behind enemy lines to do its work.
Named after a foul tempered nome, responsible for causing breakdown of machinery the Gremlin has lived up to its namesake.
During a raid conducted in the Arc Royal Defense Cordon World of Eden Jade Falcons discoverd its not always the largest mechs that win the battles.
During the raid Gremlins repeatedly destroyed supply depots, and feed information to the defending mercanaries. After on merc mech fired on a Jade Faclon Mad Cat that was engaged all hell broke loose. The Falcons were freed from the honor bound fighting and began chewing into the mercs only to discover the two lances of Gremlins picking out targets and sniping individual mechs in the line from the rear. After one star was taken out the Jade Falcon commander tried to round up the little bastards just to watch them dissapear and refrom later to start sniping again.
Having to repeatadly turn mechs to face the Gremlins weakend the Jade Falcons enough for the Mercs to turn the tide and push the Falcons back to their LZ's. On the withdrawl the Gremlins again acted as hurassers picking out tragets from safe distances, snipe run to the next ambush point to do it all over again.
While the mercs was credited with the victory, none can deny the key to the victory was the Gremlins strikes on vital supply areas, and the repeated sniping attacks that helped wear down the Falcon force.
Currently there are two varients fielded by Comstar for evaluation.
The GR1a-Gremlin takes out the advanced trageting computer, repalcing it with a Beagle Active Probe and a half of a ton of Ferro-fiberous armor.
The GRb is an almost entirely new mech stripping out the ECM gear and targting computer for a ER PPC located in the right torso, and 1.5 tons of Ferro-fiberous armor. This version, it is hoped, will act as a fast scout killer chasing down all but the fastest mechs the Clans have to offer.
The first 8 prototypes are currently in the ownership of the Eden homeguards.
After long negotiations Comstar was able to buy the GR1-Gremlins first production run of 12 mechs. However, part of the negotiating was getting Iron City to allow for license building of the mech in Rasalhague space. Those twelve mechs have been given to Hussar and former Hussar pilots, creating a much needed stockpile of parts for the rest of Hussars fielded by Comstar.
Currently a second larger run is in production, and avialiable on the open market. However, Iron City as per agreement with Comstar cannot sell these mechs to Word of Blake forces or to the Free Worlds League.
