Most Mechwarriors can rationalize that they are fighting
and destroying enemy 'Mechs, conveniently forgetting
about the person sitting in the cockpit of their target. This
is very important to many Mechwarriors as it allows them to
keep their humanity by keeping the death they cause at a
distance.
Scythe pilots do not have this luxury.
The SCT-2SW Scythe was designed with one purpose in
mind - to kill people. And it is this job at which it excels.
Nearly every weapon it carries is designed to do the
maximum damage to human targets, and its speed and
maneuverability allow it to run down any fleeing targets.
Watching a Scythe at work is a terrible, and often
nauseating, sight to behold.
Although the Scythe is a Light 'Mech, it does not
have the speed to be a scout. Rather than using the
heavier engine that would be necessary to increase the
Scythe's speed, SWI's designers decided to mount 4 jump
jets to increase maneuverability and use the rest of the
saved weight for its horrifying weapons load. This was
considered a far superior solution, as it increases this
'Mech's capabilites in enclosed environments
considerably. It does mount 5 tons of standard armor, a
significant amount for a Light 'Mech and more than
enough against the bulk of its targets.
Capabilities:
Although this 'Mech is designed primarily for an
anti-infantry role, it does mount one concession to
anti-'Mech combat: an ER Medium Laser. This is the
Scythe II's longest-ranged weapon, and does come in
useful when dealing with augmented infantry such as
Elementals.
While the Scythe's anti-'Mech capabilities may be limited,
against infantry it can be fearsome indeed. It mounts 2
Flamers as its primary weapons, backed up by 2 Machine
Guns and 2 SRM-2's carrying Inferno ammunition. The
first two weapons can devastate an infantry formation,
while the SRM-2 also serves quite well against vehicles
and enemy 'Mechs.
Notable MechWarriors:
Frank "Death's Head" Warren - "Death's Head"
Warren was well known not only for the skill with which he
piloted his Scythe, but also for the apparent enjoyment he
found in it. He got his nickname from the look on his
face after every battle, and he often boasted that he was
responsible for killing so many men that he couldn't fit all of
the kill markings on his 'Mech. When his 'Mech was finally
taken down he managed to kill 4 of the troopers that were
dragging him out of his 'Mech with his bare hands, and
was reportedly laughing hysterically as the others
systematically dismembered him as revenge for the many
comrades they had lost that day.
