Overview:

The Keres is one of the few physical reminders of the absorbed Burrocks left in Clan space. This non Omni Mech was supposed to be the rally point for a renewed push for honorable ways within the Burrocks, but proved to be too little and too late.

SaKhan Arthur Benning was one of a small number of Burrock warriors concerned with the raiding and other derzga activities the Clan was involved in. As part of his campaign to renew Burrock fighting spirit, Benning attempted to rally the trueborn to him by limiting freebirths to non OmniMech chassis. As much of their bandit related activity was performed with standard BattleMechs to prevent the Clan from being directly implicated, Benning reasoned that fairly soon only the freebirths would be involved with the bandit caste activities. However several high ranking freebirth officers proved to have more political power than the SaKhan had anticipated. In an attempt to mollify these officers, Benning convinced the Khan to authorize the creation of several BattleMech designs specifically for the freebirth warriors so they would have something unique compared to the freebirths of the other Clans that contained such warriors.

Named for an ancient Greek demon, the Keres was one of only three Burrock Mechs to actually see construction. Supposedly a scout, it was in reality a light raider designed for mobility and hit and fade attacks. The most commonly piloted design mounted the rarely used LBX-2 cannon mated with an ER Large laser for long range work and a pair of ER Medium lasers for when the fighting had grown closer.

Rather than help draw the Burrocks away from the bandit caste, the Keres only made matters worse. The freeborn never viewed the BattleMech as a special gift, seeing it for what it was- an attempt to keep them out of the Omnis. Additionally, as Keres were destroyed and recovered by other Clans, it became obvious that someone with Clan industrial technology was producing a new ‘Mech. It is likely that the Keres only added to the suspicions of other Clans. Benning was killed in a Trail of Grievance and with him went the Burrocks last crusader for change. Less then ten years later the Burrocks found themselves the facing a Trial of Absorption for bandit related activities.

A number of Keres are scattered about the Clans, mostly with the Star Adders and Blood Spirits. As second line Mechs are often used to sweeten trade deals between the Clans, Keres have filtered out into most of the Clans that employ freebirth MechWarriors.
