Overview:
First concieved during the Star League and currently used by a few clans the Road Runner was part of LAM project built by______. This project was to be built in three stages, the first was a light fighter named Fire Star. After completing the fighter _____ engineers would take the Fire Star's chassis and build a mech from it named Road Runner which would lead to the thrid stage, designing the LAM. The idea was to be able to recuperate some of the cost of R&D by being able to sell both the fighter and the mech while working on the final stage. However, fate decided against the project when the Star League fell most of the mechs and a few fighters left with General Kerensky into exile.
Capabilities:
The Road Runner was named after the flightless bird knonw ot have inhabited the North American Quadrent of Terra. Using speed to chase down its prey and to aviod becomming prey its self the Road Runner was designed to be a light fast scout.
As the Mongoose entered trials infront of Star League officals the engineers decided on a bold, if not rash, attempt to show off their mech. During the speed trials the Road Runner was let loose and screamed past the Mongoose doing over 220 kph. Startled officials watched in amazement as the mech kept the speed and never slowed down.
However, the Mogoose was soon chosen as the replacement mech officals wanted. The reason the Road Runner was not accepted was due to light armor and vaulnerability of the XL engines used in its construction.
Despite these problems the clans have still made used of the vualnerable design. The clan version mounts bothe ferro-fiberous armor and endo steel chassis as it's Star League anscester(SP) but is made a little more durable thanks ot the clan advances in XL engine technology.
But the speed and weight of the XL engine (which accoutns for half of the Road Runners 20 ton mass) has left the mech short on weapons and armor. For weapons the mech only mounts a single ER medium and two ER small lasers. While this small selection of laser based weaponry keeps the Road Runner on te battlefield for as long as the pilot can take it, the three tons of armor will not take too much punishment.
Variants:
The prototype Road Runner that crashed the Mongoose's trail carried four small lasers (Two in each arm). However, to make the mech more attractive to house troops the wepaons were upgraded on the Star League model.
The Star League model Road Runner, mounts the same engine, Ferro-Fiberous ,Armor and the Endo-Steel chassis as its clan offspring. The only difference is in the Road Runner's weaponry, the Star League varient only mounts two medium lasers (both arm mounted).
Deployment
according to a captured clan Jade Faclon tech three clans currently field the Road Runner; Jade Facon, Ice Hellion, and Hell's Horses . According to the tech the Road Runner is produced in very small quanitites and is only stationed in front line forces when speed becames paramount.
The only known surviving example of the Star League era Road Runner was destroyed as it sat in a museum on New Avolon waiting to be restored during the Federated Commonwealth's Civil war. At the time however, the example was only a shell stripped of all equipment and parts during the mulitple Succession Wars as tech grew scarce.
